Linear Perspective Terms

Perspective is important because it makes drawings appear more realistic. Even though you may know the anatomy, structure and proportions of a person’s body, figures or pictures might still seem unreal unless they are placed in relation to the eye or horizon level. Perspective is the name of this relationship. In the case of a figure, perspective means that the whole figure is based on a certain eye level. The perspective of a figure changes depending on how you look at it. Perspective allows you to position a drawing by giving it a sense of depth. With perspective in mind, it is possible to place images in the middle ground, foreground and background. Three different perspectives exist. There are three types of perspectives. Two-point perspective involves placing two vanishing points on the line of horizon. Three-point perspective involves three vanishing point.

There are three main types of these:

Two-point perspective

Three-point perspective

One-point perspectives are a kind of linear perspective. Linear perspective uses lines to represent objects, creating the illusion that they are in space. It’s a structured drawing approach. Its name comes from its single vanishing-point. The vanishing points are always located within the image. The vanishing point is obtained by extending parallel edges that meet at a single point.

Two-point perspectiveTwo-point perspectives are a kind of linear perspective. Linear perspective uses lines to create a sense of depth and space on a flat surface.

Three-point perspective is the least commonly used linear perspective. Ironically, three-point perspective is closer to the way we see things. In drawing, three-point perspective is often used to show extreme views. Imagine yourself looking up or down at a tall building.

The best way to represent these extreme perspectives is using three-point perspective. The vanishing lines are either on the horizon or just above it. The viewer can then focus on those points, above or below horizon.

Linear perspective termsVisual depth can be expressed in a number of ways, including through atmospheric and linear perspectives as well through the use of colour. Linear perspective achieves depth by using lines, the size of the forms and their placement. Though the compositions are different, all linear perspective drawings share some of the same basic terms. The horizon, or line of the sky meeting the ground or water below is called the horizon. The height and placement of vanishing points will be affected by the horizon’s height.

The vanishing is the place in which parallel lines merge into one. You can see in the photo below how parallel lines merge into one vanishing point at the horizon. There is no limit to the number of vanishing point in a scene. The horizontal surface beneath the horizon is called the ground plane. It can be either water or land. The image below shows a level ground. If the terrain were hilly or steep, the vanishing line created by parallel lines on the path may not lie on the horizontal plane and appear to be on a sloped plane. These lines have a vanishing line; they are the parallel tracks of railroads, for instance. The word orthogonal means right angles. It is the term for right angles made by lines.

It is important to distinguish the vantage point from the vanishing points. The vantage points and the location of the horizon will affect the vantage.
