The Life Story Of Famous Mexican Artist Frida Kahlo

Frida Káhlo has been a popular mexican artists who has inspired thousands of people through her unique art. She is famous for other things too. She became influential because she was proud to be Mexican, had contracted illness, and expressed her views on American social class.

In 1927, she became a member in the Mexican Communist Party. There, she met Diego Rivera as well as Julio Antonio Mella. Later, she married both of them and divorced them. In “Artists Frida” it is mentioned that Frida was always proud of Mexican roots, and started to display her pride. “She dressed in Tehuana dresses with colorful embroidery and flowing skirts. These are native to Oaxaca. Matilde Frida was born in Tehuana. Frida identified strongly with Tehuana’s matriarchal culture. Frida’s painting style was affected by the Mexican culture’s flamboyance.

Frida was plagued by accidents and illnesses. She contracted polio at age 6 and her leg became thinner. Despite her limp, she played sports with the rest of her classmates. She was struck by a trolley in 1925 and impaled with a metal rod which pierced through her back, breaking her pelvis. In 1940, she underwent two spinal bone grafts but remained immobile. In her last years, she had her leg amputated because of gangrene and developed depression. Even though she suffered all these tragedies, she still painted. She even incorporated her misfortunes in her works of art, which inspired many.

Her husband was hired by the U.S. to paint murals. Frida could now experience the social class and culture of America. However, she was not a fan of the American way of life. She explained how the rich hid away in their luxurious rooms while those who were hungry sought out basic necessities. She wrote that the upper class was disgusting and she was furious with all of these rich people.

Frida’s fame and legacy continue to grow. She is considered one of Mexico’s greatest artists and personalities. She is also known for her inspiring self-portraits. “Frida endured physical and emotional pain and built her legacy despite it.”
